Understanding Mental Health and Substance Abuse in Veterans
Military veterans are especially vulnerable to mental health issues with about one in four experiencing some form of mental health disorder. Studies on veterans and substance abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression indicate that these disorders are the most prevalent ones experienced by veterans.
About 15% of veterans who served in Afghanistan or Iraq were diagnosed with PTSD or depression and 80-90% of these veterans also had a co-occurring disorder. Substance use disorder (SUD) was the most commonly reported co occurring disorder.
Veterans face unique challenges both during their time of deployment and after their military service has ended. The trauma of combat, pain from physical injuries, stresses related to both being away from home and family, and managing the reintegration process afterwards all contribute to veterans being more likely to self medicate with substance use.
The most effective substance abuse treatment centers for veterans are those that understand and can effectively address the unique needs of our military heroes. This includes the provision of trauma-informed care and dual diagnosis programs to support veterans’ healing and health in mind and body. In partnership with the VA Community Care Network in Bloomington and Galloway, we strive to ensure veterans have access to the most comprehensive support.
Opioid Use and Abuse in Veterans
Opioid abuse has become a common substance abuse issue among veterans. Often initiated by prescription medications used to provide pain management following injury, opioids can all too easily become addictive. With the introduction of synthetic opioids, like fentanyl, that has a much greater risk for addiction and overdose, opioid misuse has become a leading mental health issue for military individuals.
Treatment for veterans with opioid use disorder is complicated by secondary issues unique to them, so treatment should be customized and personalized to address these unique concerns as well to provide the social support and interpersonal connections that veterans especially need.
Our wide range of treatment options include medication-assisted treatment (MAT) programs to ease withdrawal symptoms and support the long-term sobriety of veterans in opioid recovery. You and your care team will tailor your MAT therapy plan to meet your unique and evolving needs. Options include methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone induction and maintenance. MAT therapies are also available for veterans experiencing alcohol dependency.

Boca recovery housing was very comfortable for the time I spent there. The apartment has two bedrooms fully furnished with kitchen appliances and all the necessary items to cook meals every day. It definitely allowed me to transition back to reality very easily as I was attending groups and AA meetings every day. I enjoyed using the gym and basketball they provided. I would recommend to anyone.
