We surveyed over 1,000 Americans to learn about their plans for participation and analyzed online search trends to uncover where interest in Sober October is highest. In this report, we dive into the demographics embracing sober curiosity, examine how staying alcohol-free could improve health, and explore how these changes might extend beyond October into the holiday season and beyond.

  • Physical benefits: Without alcohol, your liver gets a break and can detox more efficiently, digestion improves, and your skin may clear up. You may also experience better sleep, as alcohol disrupts REM sleep, and you could lose weight by cutting out empty calories. Sobriety boosts your immune system, helping you fight off colds and flu more effectively.
  • Emotional well-being: Many people report feeling more emotionally stable, with reduced anxiety and fewer mood swings. Mental clarity improves, and you may feel more present in social situations, leading to better, more meaningful conversations.
  • Social improvements: Staying sober can open the door to new activities, like mocktail nights, fitness classes, or hobbies that don’t involve alcohol.

To stay on track, Dr. Tarlow suggests trying these tips:

For this study, we leveraged Google Search Trends to explore the search interest for Sober October over the last three years. Additionally, we surveyed 1,003 Americans who don’t generally maintain a sober lifestyle if they plan to participate in Sober October this year.
