Drug and Alcohol Addiction in Florida

Florida sees drug and alcohol addiction in every form. It affects adults and teenagers alike. Floridians suffer from addictions to drugs like opioids, benzodiazepines and methamphetamines. Meth addiction in particular has been rising each year since 2015. In addition, 17% of adults in Florida reporting they’d engaged in excessive drinking in 2022. This is a significant increase from 2020 when data were last reported.

The risks and results of drug and alcohol addiction have seriously affected individuals and families throughout the state, with some of the highest national rates of ER visits, overdose responses, and amount of naloxone administered.

46,000 ER Visits

Non-fatal emergency room visits related to drug overdoses each year

105,000 Overdoses

EMTs across the state also respond to more than 105,000 overdose calls

52,000 Narcan Doses

Were administered on these overdose calls to prevent opioid ODs

While many of those individuals get a second chance to save their lives, not everyone does. More than 7,800 drug overdose deaths occur in Florida each year. That equates to someone in the state dying almost every hour. More than 6,000 of those overdose deaths involve opioids.

Addiction Treatment in Florida

The rates of addiction and overdose in Florida show the stark reality of drug and alcohol abuse throughout the state. But that doesn’t have to be your story because treatment is available.

56,000+

People actively sought treatment for their substance use disorder in Florida in 2023 and many more are successfully in recovery after completing their treatment.

This being said, access to addiction treatment could be better in Florida. While there are ample places to get outpatient treatment, Florida only has 1.5 beds for inpatient addiction treatment per 100,000 residents. That’s why Boca Recovery Center and other organizations in Florida are working to improve treatment access and availability.

What to Expect from Drug and Alcohol Addiction Treatment in Florida

If you’re ready to put your addiction in the past and create a new life in recovery then Florida rehabs can help you and guide you along the way.

Addiction treatment is often a journey with several stages or steps. You’re likely to begin your recovery journey at an intensive level of treatment. As you grow stronger in your sobriety, you’ll step down to less intensive levels of care so you can take on more independence in your recovery.

A lot of times the recovery process starts with detox. This is where you work past the initial withdrawal symptoms and your body learns how to function without drugs and alcohol. Your next step after this might be residential rehab, where you live at the treatment center and your main goal will be to heal and work toward recovery.

There are also several levels of outpatient treatment available. A partial hospitalization program, allows you to get high level treatment while you live at home. You’ve receive care at the rehab center for at least three to five hours every weekday for a period of weeks.

The next step down is intensive outpatient treatment where you come to the treatment center around three days a week for a few hours at a time. Finally, there’s traditional outpatient treatment. At this stage you’ll focus on relapse prevention and the preparation to be discharged from formal treatment. General outpatient care may consist of as few as one treatment session per week to help you with ongoing challenges.

Everyone’s recovery journey is different. You might not go through all of these steps or you may only need outpatient care. The experts at our Florida treatment centers can help you understand your options and create a treatment plan that suits your needs.

Addiction Treatment for Specialized Circumstances

Many Florida rehab centers create individualized treatment plans to give you what you need to overcome your addiction. They understand that addiction treatment isn’t a one size fits all journey. How Much Does Addiction Treatment Cost in Florida?

One of the most common concerns among people with addiction is the cost of treatment. That’s understandable because the average cost of inpatient drug rehab in Florida is over $56,000. Your cost will depend on your individual recovery journey and the levels of care you need. The good news is you probably won’t have to pay that amount out of pocket because there are many options for paying for rehab.

Ways to Pay for Rehab

Rehabs in Florida typically have financial staff who can help you understand your payment options. This will vary from one facility to the next but most have lots of different choices.

Resources for Drug and Alcohol Addiction in Florida

If you’re struggling with drug and alcohol addiction in Florida then there are hundreds of treatment centers that can help you make a change and develop the skills you need for recovery. But there are other resources in Florida that can help you along the way too.

Harm reduction is another important part of the battle against addiction. Harm education organizations are designed to minimize the risks of addiction until individuals are ready to get help. The Florida Harm Reduction Collective is committed to the mission of reducing the risks of injury, illness, and death among active drug and alcohol abusers. Many rehabs in Florida also help with harm reduction by offering Narcan or clean needles.

State Sponsored Addiction Treatment Programs

The State of Florida has a responsibility to look out for the best interests of local residents and that includes helping to reduce substance use issues in the state. There are several different types of programs they manage that play a part in this.

Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) Addiction Services

Florida DCF

The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) is the main state agency that oversees addiction treatment. They have several programs that focus on serving people with addiction. For example they have a provider network of community based treatment centers that provide treatment for Floridians in need including detox, treatment and recovery support services.

Opioid Response Project

Another key project within DCF is Florida’s State Opioid Response Project. This is a specialized program designed to reduce opioid addiction. It uses funding from a federal grant to help support many different aspects of treatment and harm reduction. Services include hospital bridge programs that connect patients with medication assisted treatment (MAT) as well as Narcan spray distribution. It also includes leading prevention programs and recovery support services.

CORE Network

The CORE Network stands for Coordinated Opioid Recovery Network and it’s a unique opioid addiction program that’s only in Florida. It’s a combined effort between the Department of Children and Families and the Florida Department of Health as well as the Agency for Health Care Administration.

Essentially the CORE Network is an integrated system that combines addiction treatment providers and recovery support services with primary care and other related services in a cohesive and coordinated way. This makes it easier for people to access care and to have the ongoing treatment they need at each stage of recovery including sustained sobriety. The network is implemented on a county by county basis and is currently in place in 30 counties.

Treatment Options Covered by Medicare & Medicaid

Medicaid in Florida covers many types of addiction treatment so if you qualify for Medicaid then you may be in luck. Plus it might cover more than you expect. According to the SAMHSA state profile 49% of treatment centers in Florida accept Medicaid and 34% accept other state financed insurance plans.

Eligibility Criteria and Application Process

Programs from the state that fund addiction treatment are typically offered by community providers. In most cases you’ll apply for grant funded or subsidized treatment through the provider or rehab center. You don’t have to apply directly to the state. Keep in mind that each provider will have different qualifying criteria based on factors like your household income and family size.

Local Government and County Resources

Along with the state government, there are also affordable resources for addiction at the local and county levels. This will depend on where you live of course but these are a few options you might have available.

County Level Addiction Support Services

In a lot of counties, the main way to support residents in addiction recovery is with the CORE Network. As we noted it’s been implemented in 30 counties so far including Palm Beach County, Orange County and Broward County to name a few. The resources for addiction will vary from one county to the next but many counties have dedicated projects to aid recovery besides the CORE Network.

Seminole County

Seminole County has SCORE or the Seminole Collaborative Opioid Response Effort. It’s a cohesive program that identifies county residents who have overdosed on opioids and provides a pipeline of treatment from detox to stabilization to rehab.

Nassau County

Nassau County has educational resources and a listing of addiction treatment centers for adults and adolescents.

Orange County

Orange County has a specialized program for heroin recovery called Heroes Against Heroin. This program connects residents who have heroin addiction to treatment and harm reduction in the area.

Miami-Dade County

Miami-Dade County sponsors treatment programs through the Community Action and Human Services Department Rehabilitative Services Division.

Municipal Health Department Programs

Just like at the county level cities and municipalities each have their own approaches to helping with the substance use issues in their communities. Tampa has a local directory to guide you on where to get help in the area. The City of Jacksonville also has special services for people who are in the criminal justice system who have addiction. To find out what’s available to you, check with your city and especially with their health department.

Non Profit Organization Support

Government agencies at each level have an interest in addiction recovery and there are also many nonprofit organizations that are contributing to the cause. Resources from nonprofits range from free addiction treatment to counseling and guidance.

Non Profit Treatment Centers

The Salvation Army is best known for their thrift stores but did you know they also have a free treatment program for drug and alcohol addiction? It’s a six month residential program and in exchange for free room and board as well as free addiction counseling you’ll work up to 40 hours a week in their facilities during the program. That supports your free program and serves as a productive form of work therapy. There are six of these Adult Rehabilitation Centers in Florida.

The Hanley Foundation is another nonprofit that has free services for addiction recovery. They have a treatment center and do other work in addiction like advocacy and recovery support.

Local Faith Based Treatment Initiatives

The Salvation Army and the Hanley Foundation are larger nonprofit organizations that help Florida residents in recovery. Yet there are many smaller organizations that offer help here too.

There are some local churches that have treatment initiatives. They might have full treatment programs or they might offer funding for you to get treatment at a rehab center. Many churches host support group meetings or they might assist your recovery in other ways too. The programs available and the eligibility requirements will vary so check with your local churches.

Community Health Centers Offering Free Counseling

A community health center is an organization that provides a variety of services to help their neighbors with health and wellness. They usually aid underserved communities or fill needs that aren’t readily available. Sometimes they have free counseling for addiction and mental health.

NAMI Greater Orlando has a directory of local community centers and other facilities with free or reduced cost treatment.

If you’re in South Florida then Thriving Mind South Florida can connect you with free and affordable treatment.

Voices for Help has a directory of free and low cost health centers throughout the state including those that offer mental health and substance use treatment.

Caridad Center’s behavioral health clinic in Palm Beach County offers free counseling as well.

Federal Resources Available in Florida

On top of support from local organizations and governments you also have some help from the federal government when you’re in Florida. There are several different agencies and programs that can help you get the treatment you need.

SAMHSA

The main organization in the federal government that helps with drug and alcohol addiction is the SAMHSA. They have programs for several different aspects and stages of addiction recovery. They also help fund community behavioral health clinics and addiction medication programs for opioid addiction and alcohol addiction. They also have an extensive directory to help you find treatment options that meet the criteria you need.

VA Addiction Treatment for Veterans

If you’re a veteran, military service member or an immediate family member of a veteran then your benefits will cover addiction treatment. In fact the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has a full continuum of care for addiction recovery from detox and residential treatment to MAT and outpatient therapy.

Federal Grant Supported Treatment Centers

The federal government provides some grant money to treatment centers and state governments to help fund addiction treatment. For example, the SAMHSA sends block grants to the state of Florida and all 50 states. Florida uses this funding to help support treatment for those who can’t afford it including those who are uninsured and underinsured. Typically a treatment center has a certain amount of grant money set aside for this so if you qualify they may be able to use the money to offer treatment at either no cost or a lower cost.

National Helpline and Referral Services

Along with funding the federal government has some national helplines and referral services. This is who you call when you’re in a crisis or you aren’t sure where to start with your treatment and they’ll give you all the information you need.

988

The national crisis lifeline is for emergencies like an addiction or mental health crisis

1-800-662-HELP

SAMHSA also has a national drug helpline available for anyone in crisis

Online and Telehealth Resources

Modern technology has made many aspects of our lives easier and that includes addiction treatment. Explore these online and telehealth resources that could help you in your recovery.

Online Support Groups

Being able to talk to people who understand what you’re going through can be instrumental in a healthy recovery and some people find this in online support groups. In the Rooms is one option that has chat rooms for different needs and The Daily Pledge is similar. If you want to start your own support group The Recovery Village has a hosting platform for online groups.

Telehealth Addiction Consultation Services

Taking the step of physically going to a treatment center can be difficult especially if you don’t have reliable transportation. Fortunately a lot of treatment centers today have telehealth consultations available so you can meet with them online to talk about treatment and how they can help you.

Digital Resources and Recovery Apps

There’s an app for everything and sobriety is no exception. There are recovery apps that can track your sobriety and help you find support meetings near you. Some have message boards and peer communities too or emergency helplines. Others can give you relapse prevention resources like tips and meditations. Some popular apps include Sober Sidekick and I Am Sober as well as Pear reSET and Sober Grid.

Emergency and Crisis Intervention Services

Sometimes you need emergency help when you’re in addiction recovery. Examples of a crisis include being tempted to relapse, having a mental health crisis or relapsing and being unsure what to do. Keep these emergency resources handy in case the need arises.

Free Crisis Hotlines

No matter where you are in your recovery or in your relationships with family and friends there’s always someone you can call who wants to listen and help. One of these hotlines is 211 which is operated by United Way. It’s a free hotline for emergency counseling and help finding treatment. It’s available by dialing 211 or through text or online chat.

Emergency Detox Referral Services

When you’ve reached a decision point and you’re ready to start your recovery you don’t have to wait for things like paperwork and clinic hours. Florida emergency rooms can refer you to detox services at any time of the day. They’ll do this for people who come in with an overdose but they can also help you if you just walk in.

Crisis Intervention Services

Along with addiction treatment some treatment centers also offer crisis intervention services. Here they can help you navigate how to take the first step in recovery and find emergency help. If you have a loved one with drug and alcohol addiction then they can counsel you on how to guide them to treatment too. Reach out to rehab centers in your area to ask about crisis intervention services.

Alternative and Supplemental Support Options

Different strategies and approaches work for different people in recovery. If traditional treatment hasn’t been effective for you or if you want to supplement your treatment consider these alternative and supplemental options in Florida.

12 Step Programs

You’ve probably heard of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. These are free programs that can help you at any stage of your recovery. They have a 12 step system that guides you through self-growth and healing from addiction. You’ll find local chapters for AA and NA in nearly every city in Florida.

Community Support Groups

Support groups can help you navigate your recovery and sustain your sobriety for years after your formal treatment and they’re usually free to attend. One way to find support groups in your area is through the SAMHSA support group directory. NAMI Florida also has support groups throughout the state.

Peer Led Recovery Networks

For so many in recovery the best people to help them are people who have been in their shoes and know what addiction and recovery are like. One resource for peer recovery is the Peer Support Coalition of Florida which has a directory of peer groups and centers in the state. The Peer Recovery Center of Excellence also has a directory of recovery community organizations that are peer led.

Florida State Law and Drugs and Alcohol

Drug and alcohol addiction has serious risks for your health and is a potentially fatal condition. It also puts you at risk from a legal perspective. The legal consequences of addiction can severely damage not only your freedom and comfort today but your opportunities for the future, too. Every year there are more than 83,000 drug arrests in Florida.

What are the penalties if you get arrested for drug or alcohol related crimes in Florida? That depends on factors like which substances you possessed and how much you had as well as your prior record and other circumstances. Some drug possession cases can have a sentence of up to 30 years in prison. Even a misdemeanor possession charge can carry a sentence of up to a year in prison.

DUIs have serious legal penalties too. You could be sentenced to up to five years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines depending on how many DUI convictions you have in the past and other factors.

Conclusion

Addiction has touched every community in Florida to some degree or another. If you’re in active addiction, you may feel like you’re trapped without a way out but there’s hope.
