Dilaudid Addiction Treatment

Dilaudid is the brand-name version of the drug hydromorphone. Experts say the abuse of hydromorphone is a continuing problem in the United States.[1] If you’ve abused this drug and developed an addiction, treatment can help. A good program combines medications, therapy, and aftercare to help you change your behavior for good.

Treating Dilaudid Addiction at Boca Recovery Center

A well-rounded program for Dilaudid addiction includes multiple components. At Boca Recovery Center, we perform in-depth assessments and conversations to help us understand what will work for you. Your program might include the following elements:

Medical Detox for Dilaudid Withdrawal Management

Quitting a powerful drug like Dilaudid isn’t easy. Without help, you can feel overwhelmed with cravings. Your symptoms can grow so severe that you develop life-threatening dehydration. Withdrawal management at Boca Recovery Center can help you get sober safely.

Dilaudid withdrawal requires close supervision. Your team will provide an initial dose of medications and watch your response. If you still feel sick, your dose may increase. If you feel too sedated, your dose may decrease.[2] This process will continue until your body has adjusted, very slowly, to a lack of Dilaudid or other opioids

At the end of medical detox, you may be taking no medications at all. However, if you can’t handle a tapering dose until you’re taking none at all, you may need continued medication management. Your team will determine if this is the best choice for you.

Medication-Assisted Treatment

If you don’t feel safe and comfortable without medications at the end of detox, your team may suggest medication-assisted treatment (MAT). In a program like this, you will take a relatively low dose of medications as long as you need them to keep your cravings and relapse risks under control.

Three main MAT options exist, including the following:[3]

  • Opioid agonists: Medications like methadone attach to the same opioid receptors that Dilaudid uses. Methadone works slower, so it doesn’t make you feel high. Opioid agonists like this have been used for more than 40 years in addiction treatment programs.
  • Partial opioid agonists: Medications like buprenorphine attach loosely to opioid receptors. They don’t produce euphoria, but they can reduce cravings and help to ensure long-term sobriety.
  • Opioid antagonists: Medications like naltrexone block opioid receptors. You won’t get high if you slip and relapse to Dilaudid or other opioids.

Opioid agonists are typically delivered in a clinical setting. Partial opioid agonists, especially when combined with an opioid antagonist element, are safe to use while living at home. As your inpatient care at Boca Recovery Center comes to a close, you may be transferred to a buprenorphine-based solution, so you can work with a provider at home on your continued sobriety. Your Boca Recovery Center team will make the necessary referrals.

Comprehensive Inpatient Rehab Treatment for Dilaudid Abuse

The American Society of Addiction Medicine has identified four levels of care. Intensive inpatient programs, like the one we offer at Boca Recovery Center, are considered Level 4 interventions. This type of care is more intense than any other.[4]

At Boca Recovery Center, you’ll engage in a program that combines medications, therapy, support group work, and more. You’ll spend all day, every day, working with a talented team that has deep experience in addiction management.

Some people are ready to move from inpatient care to independent life. Others need a stair-step approach that involves intensive outpatient care, partial hospitalization, or sober living homes. Your team will stay in close contact with you and ensure you get what you need to quit using Dilaudid for a lifetime.

Therapy

Experts say that optimal addiction treatment involves therapy.[5] Boca Recovery Center specializes in evidence-based care, so we always include therapy in our treatment programs.

These are proven therapies that might be part of your treatment program:[5]

  • Motivational interviewing: This type of therapy is intended to motivate people to change their thoughts and behaviors, so they can support recovery.
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy: This structured form of therapy involves creating a clear plan, setting goals, and engaging in homework outside of the therapy sessions.
  • Contingency management: This form of therapy involves rewards therapists give for changes their patients make. This subtle shift can make therapy seem directly gratifying, which can be critical for people with addictions.
  • Family therapy: This type of therapy helps you understand the issues that underlie your addiction. You may emerge as a stronger family that can support long-term recovery.

Long-Term Recovery From Dilaudid Addiction

Addiction is a chronic condition. Just as people with diabetes or heart disease must work on recovery every day, so do people with addictions.[6] At the end of your treatment program at Boca Recovery Center, your team will develop a plan to support your recovery for a lifetime and reduce your relapse risks.

Your plan might include the following elements:

  • 12-step support group meetings, such as Narcotics Anonymous
  • Non-12-step support group meetings, such as SMART Recovery
  • Group counseling
  • Individual therapy
  • Drug education classes
  • Vocational classes

You’re not required to pick just one or two elements from this list. In fact, it’s best to pull from as many resources as you can. You can lean on these services whenever you’re moving through a hard time or dealing with challenges. The resources you need may change with time.

Getting Started at Boca Recovery Center

You’re not required to take a test or meet ideal criteria before enrolling at Boca Recovery Center. The help you need can begin with just one phone call. That conversation could change your life for the better.

The intake specialists at Boca Recovery Center will hold a confidential pre-screening when you call. We’ll ask about your Dilaudid abuse, your past attempts at treatment, and your goals. We’ll also ask about your location, where you want to get care, and your insurance coverage. At the end of this talk, we’ll understand if our program is right for you, and we’ll build a customized treatment plan.
After the conversation, we’ll talk with your insurance company and take care of preauthorization concerns. We’ll also handle the travel arrangements, so you can get to the facility easily. When you arrive, we’ll help you get unpacked and settled into treatment.
