Partial Hospitalization

Partial Hospitalization
At Boca Recovery Center, we offer a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for individuals who are in need of intensive rehab treatment for their substance use disorder and co-occurring mental health issues, but are ready or able to live independently and engage in activities of daily living as they prepare to move back into the community. These are individuals who do not require 24 hour medical supervision, and are able to attend outside 12 step meetings, and go out on passes in the community with sober support. However, these clients participate in treatment 5 days a week for 6 hours, and 3 hours on a Saturday. There are sober social events and activities built into the program, and clients are encouraged to find sponsors and start building a sober support network. In PHP, clients are also able to have the use of their cellphone and electronic devices after a brief settling-in period of 72 hours after admitting or transitioning to that level of care.

Alcohol and drug problems are often intertwined with a person’s environment. Removing an individual from those aspects of their life that contribute to substance abuse is essential for a successful recovery.
Partial Hospitalization treatment for substance use disorders works for many people who are better able to control their cravings and addiction while still functioning in the outside world. People with more severe addictions often need to participate in inpatient or residential programs where they receive intensive care while living with 24 hour medical and clinical supervision. Because not everyone can commit the time and resources for residential treatment, or afford the disruption to normal life, Partial Hospitalization Programs offer intensive care to individuals struggling with substance use disorders but who are able to live independently and within a community environment.
Boca Recovery Center offers an effective partial hospitalization program (PHP) to aid your recovery from substance use disorders. During our PHP, you will spend more time in therapy compared to a standard outpatient program, and live independently within our community housing component, which essentially mirrors apartment-style living. Get in touch with us today on (855) 637-1331 to find out more about our partial hospitalization program.
In the following article, we introduce you to the concept of partial hospitalization and how it works. We explore the different types of therapies offered as part of a PHP. We also compare partial hospitalization to inpatient and outpatient drug rehab programs. You will learn about the duration of a PHP and its cost as well as find out if you are a good candidate for partial hospitalization.
What is a Partial Hospitalization Program?
A partial hospitalization program is an addiction treatment program that is appropriate for people who require intensive therapy but do not want to stay within the confines of a residential alcohol or drug rehab facility. The time spent in treatment during a PHP is more than a conventional outpatient program. The person undergoing PHP treatment needs to be present on-site for several hours a day, multiple times a week. A multidisciplinary PHP team provides medically-supervised detoxification to manage mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms.1 Later, the recovering addict can progress to other treatment modalities, such as medication management and psychotherapy.
Partial hospitalization programs often serve as a “step down” to inpatient or residential programs, allowing addicts to transition gradually to normal life.
A partial hospitalization program is indispensable in providing recovering addicts with the appropriate level of care to make long-term sobriety a reality.
How does Partial Hospitalization addiction treatment work?
A person participating in a Partial Hospitalization Program is monitored closely for the duration of their treatment. This helps achieve better continuity of care compared to a traditional outpatient drug rehab program. Participants in a PHP receive several evidence-based therapies and a comprehensive approach to addiction treatment.
Recovering addicts learn to manage cravings and handle difficult emotions that can precipitate a relapse. Participants also gain skills to improve interpersonal relationships and build a better future. Treatment for co-occurring disorders, such as mental health conditions, is offered simultaneously. Throughout the partial hospitalization program, a person is free to live a normal life outside the treatment hours.
Partial hospitalization can shorten the length of stay in a residential drug or alcohol rehab facility. It can serve as a transition between inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment.
Addiction Treatment in PHP
The first step in starting a Partial Hospitalization Program at Boca Recovery Center is an intake evaluation. During this evaluation, our staff assess the individual’s needs in terms of where they are in the process of recovery, and develop a personalized treatment plan to address their treatment needs. Our PHP is a holistic recovery program that involves many different addiction treatment experts. Here are some of the services offered as part of our PHP:
Medication Management
Our team provides medications to manage mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms. This allows for comfortable management of any residual symptoms of withdrawal from alcohol or drugs. It is worth noting that people with severe or life-threatening withdrawal symptoms will not be appropriate for PHP as they require around-the-clock supervision with an inpatient stay. Doctors and nurses are available to administer maintenance medications to reduce cravings. The team also treats any complications arising from substance abuse.
Psychotherapy
Individual and group counseling sessions allow recovering addicts to work on unhealthy behaviors that led to their addiction. Strategies include stress management, coping skills, and relapse prevention.
Treatment of Co-occurring Disorders
Participants in a partial hospitalization program receive treatment for co-occurring mental disorders in addition to substance abuse. The treatment during a PHP works on both conditions concurrently and promotes a more lasting and complete recovery.
Complementary therapies
Yoga, meditation, nutrition, fitness, art and music therapy are some of the complementary therapies that are used to make recovery easier.
Aftercare
Treatment does not end when a person completes rehab at the partial hospitalization program at Boca Recovery Center. Our aftercare plan consists of relapse prevention strategies, support groups, 12-step programs, and continued outpatient therapy to maintain sobriety.
Partial hospitalization programs are staffed by an interdisciplinary team of trained professionals and addiction counselors to administer the necessary interventions and address the patient’s needs.
What is the difference between Inpatient/Residential drug treatment, Partial Hospitalization, and Intensive Outpatient Programs?
People who choose Inpatient/Residential drug rehab need to live onsite in a residential facility for the duration of their treatment. They receive intensive 24/7 care and support and spend most of the day in therapy sessions.
The partial hospitalization program at Boca Recovery Center offers in-depth treatment for substance use disorders. Individuals seeking recovery can live independently while receiving addiction treatment. The time spent in therapy is less than an residential program. PHP usually involves addiction treatment for 6 hours a day, Monday through Friday, and for 3 hours on a Saturday.
An intensive outpatient program (IOP) for drug treatment is less time-consuming than partial hospitalization. The timeframe to receive therapies during an IOP is more flexible. This makes it easier for people to work addiction treatment around their work schedule and family obligations. Typically, people spend 2-4 hours a day, 3-4 days a week during intensive outpatient addiction treatment.
Will I benefit from a Partial Hospitalization Program?
Partial Hospitalization Programs are more intensive than standard outpatient rehab and less intensive than residential alcohol or drug rehab. If you have completed a residential stay at a substance use treatment facility, a PHP can help you transition back to normal life. Partial Hospitalization Programs are particularly useful as a step-down from 30-day inpatient programs which are frequently too short to achieve lasting sobriety. Following your participation in a PHP, you will be able to taper down to an outpatient program as you continue through the recovery process.
On the other hand, if you are participating in an outpatient addiction treatment program and need more intensive care, a PHP can offer the stepped-up structure you need to stay sober.
Partial hospitalization can help some people avoid hospitalization. It is ideal for people who are ready for independent living. It is more flexible and less expensive than inpatient treatment.
Is Partial Hospitalization treatment right for everyone?
A person’s lifestyle and home situation play a critical role in determining the success of PHP addiction treatment. If an individual lives in a toxic environment, it can encourage substance abuse and increase the chances of relapse.
Partial hospitalization programs utilize many of the same therapies that are offered during inpatient rehab, but the level of care is less intense. People with severe addictions may, therefore, need to enroll in a residential program to receive the care they need. Inpatient or Residential treatment also works better than a PHP in removing access to drugs and alcohol.
Other situations where PHPs are not ideal include:
- For victims of abuse.
- For people who have family members who use drugs.
- For individuals who have relapsed multiple times.
- For those without a strong support system.
- For people who are not highly motivated to quit.
Duration of partial hospitalization programs
Each person is unique. A Partial Hospitalization Program needs to be tailored to address individual needs. Boca Recovery Center’s Partial Hospitalization Program has no fixed duration. The length of the PHP depends on the addict’s needs. Once a person completes the PHP successfully, they may transition to a intensive outpatient program with less visits per week and less hours of treatment needed to sustain long-term recovery.
Cost of Partial Hospitalization drug treatment
The cost of a PHP depends on the length of the program. Typically, partial hospitalization programs cost less than residential drug and alcohol treatment programs. Most insurance plans cover partial hospitalization at least partially because addiction treatment is considered an essential health benefit. However, if you or a loved one is paying out of pocket for a partial hospitalization drug addiction program, there are various finance options available to you, such as:
- Personal savings
- Special healthcare loans
- Loans with your home as collateral
- Credit card loans for healthcare at a lower interest rate
- Sliding scale payment plans
- Crowdfunding campaigns
Maintaining early recovery through Partial Hospitalization
The Partial Hospitalization Program at Boca Recovery Center offers the same dedicated treatment and professional care as all our other programs. Our PHP includes individual, group, and family therapy sessions in a structured environment that is designed to promote recovery. You have the freedom to continue living in an independent, community housing component as you work your way to lasting sobriety.
With this freedom comes responsibility. Participants in our partial hospitalization program are expected to adapt and apply what they learn during treatment to their real-world environment. This includes healthy interactions with family and friends, resisting temptations, and maintaining a productive academic or work life.
Boca Recovery Center’s Partial Hospitalization Program is not a one-size-fits-all approach to addiction treatment. We will work with you to determine the best course of treatment. Our staff is on hand to help you every step of the way and give you the tools and resources you need to stay clean.
