Partial Hospitalization

Your addiction symptoms aren’t severe enough to require around-the-clock care, but you’re not ready for the independence that comes with outpatient treatment, and residential care doesn’t seem like enough. Consider partial hospitalization. You’ll work on your recovery in a protected space almost every day, but you’ll have a chance to practice sober skills in real time.

What to Expect

1

1. Intake & Assessment

When you enroll in a partial hospitalization program, you’ll complete any intake paperwork needed and then receive a comprehensive assessment, which will evaluate substance abuse history and patterns, physical and mental health, treatment and detox history, and more.

Everyone’s history, experiences, and needs are different, which is why the information from the evaluation is used to guide your individualized treatment planning.

2

2. During Treatment

PHPs are the most intensive outpatient options available, including up to 30 hours per week of treatment modalities, such as:

  • Individual therapy
  • Group counseling
  • Family therapy
  • Skills and drug education classes
  • Medication management
  • Dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring disorders

Although treatment duration may vary, you can expect to attend a PHP for several weeks to a few months.

3

3. Aftercare & Ongoing Support

As you near the end of your PHP, the treatment team will create an individualized aftercare plan for you. This plan may include stepping down to a less intensive program, such as an IOP or outpatient program. Or your plan may involve transitioning into a sober living home, joining a support group, or attending ongoing therapy.

Benefits of Partial Hospitalization

Enroll in a partial hospitalization program, and you’ll make a commitment to your recovery. This is an intensive form of care that comes with the following intense benefits:

  • Robust treatment - Get treatment 6 hours a day, Monday through Friday, and 3 hours on Saturday. Spend more time in therapy than a standard outpatient program, and live independently.
  • Monitoring and management - Regular check-ins ensure your medications are working and your therapy is helping. You won’t have to wait for an appointment, as staff is ready to help.
  • Free time - Not everyone can commit the time and resources for residential treatment, or afford the disruption to normal life it brings. Partial hospitalization programs offer a good option.
  • Sobriety practice - Live with family or loved ones while attending care. Learn how to fill your free time without relapsing to drug or alcohol use.
  • Community - Spend recovery time with other people who understand addiction and who want to get better.

What Patients Say

Treatment Methods & Services

Partial hospitalization programs combine robust treatment with aspects of independent living. You’ll use the following tools to help you recover:

Medical Drug Detox

Withdrawal can be tough, depending on the severity of the addiction and personal factors. In a medical detox program, you’ll have medical care and support as you safely withdraw from substances of abuse.

Maintenance Medications

Drugs like alcohol and opioids cause long-term chemical changes deep within the brain. Some people need medications for long periods, including after medical detox programs are complete. Get the medications you need, and the monitoring to keep you safe, in partial hospitalization programs.

Psychotherapy

Long-term sobriety starts with new habits and thought patterns. In psychotherapy sessions conducted by trained professionals, you’ll learn more about your relapse risks, your history, and your future.

Dual Diagnosis Drug Treatment

Anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns can complicate your recovery, but they don’t have to stop it. Medications and psychotherapy can help you manage and understand your mental health, so you can focus on sobriety.

Complementary Therapies

Relax your mind and control your stress with yoga, meditation, and exercise. Dig deep into trauma responses with art or music therapy. Eat nutritious meals made for your healing body.

Safe Housing

You’ll spend most of every day within the treatment facility, working on your recovery. However, your free time is your own. Build solid relapse prevention skills while you’re living independently.

Sober Activities

Connect with others in recovery through fun-filled sober activities built into your treatment program. Share tips and techniques with others who understand where you are and where you want to go.

Post-Residence Support

Recovery support doesn’t stop when you leave the program. PHPs offer ongoing aftercare support to help you resist relapse and maintain your recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

A partial hospitalization program is an addiction treatment program appropriate for people who require intensive therapy but do not want to stay within the confines of a residential alcohol or drug rehab facility. More time is spent in treatment during a PHP than in a conventional outpatient program. The person undergoing PHP treatment must be on site several hours a day, multiple times a week.

It depends. Some partial hospitalization programs have no fixed duration, so they can tailor treatment to meet patients’ needs. Others may last for a few weeks or months.

The cost of a PHP depends on the length of the program. Typically, partial hospitalization programs cost less than residential drug and alcohol treatment programs. Most insurance plans cover partial hospitalization at least partially because addiction treatment is considered an essential health benefit. However, if you or a loved one is paying out of pocket for a partial hospitalization drug addiction program, there are various finance options available to you.
