Understanding Florida Dual Diagnosis Treatment
The term dual diagnosis refers to having co-occurring disorders at the same time. They can be any two diagnoses, but since it is so common for mental health and substance use disorders to happen together, the term is often reserved for these two diagnoses specifically.
There are a few factors that contribute to why it is so common for mental illness and substance use disorder to co-occur. Understanding these factors can be instrumental in selecting the right dual diagnosis treatment facility for you.
Some Mental Health Disorders Make People in Florida More Vulnerable to Substance Use
Mental health disorders that affect impulse control, like ADHD, can make it more difficult to resist the instant gratification from drug use. At the same time, they can also make it more difficult to associate the negative consequences of substance use with the substance.
Severe, Chronic Stress in Florida May Contribute to Both Mental Illness and Substance Use
High-stress work and school environments, especially when there is bullying, can lead to anxiety and depression at the same time that they lead to substance use. Substance use can start as an escape or a coping mechanism but can quickly become a separate problem. Trauma can lead to substance use for similar reasons. Additionally, with trauma, substance use may have initially served as a survival strategy but later become a factor that perpetuates trauma, causing a vicious cycle.
Many people use substances to self medicate a mental health disorder in Florida
It’s very common for people with anxiety to use substances to relax, leading to problems with alcohol dependence and worsening anxiety. People may sometimes try stimulants in an attempt to improve their mood but may find a worsening of depression and anxiety once they wear off, leading to more use.
Substance use may cause or worsen some mental illnesses
Cannabis use has been linked to increases in psychotic disorder, and cocaine use may worsen bipolar disorder.

When a rehab is inclusive of people with a dual diagnosis, it incorporates treatments that guide people toward dual recovery. When you’re shopping for dual diagnosis treatment centers in Florida, look for facilities that use therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy.
These are both therapies that have been shown to be effective in a wide range of mental health disorders and addiction. Look for a program that has a therapeutic community that is actively managed by staff so that it remains therapeutic. This is important because peer support is crucial to recovery both in addiction and in mental health.
Boca Recovery Center incorporates all of these important factors into our luxury dual diagnosis treatment centers.
