New York state struggles with a lot of the same drug use challenges plaguing states across the nation. As with many other states, more resources and state funds have been allocated to help residents get the care they need. Still, there’s plenty of room for progress. Here are some of the latest data points reported by the Office of Addiction Services and Supports,
Fewer than half of individuals who had a substance use disorder in the state report seeking treatment for their addiction struggles in 2022. Of those, 39.5% who sought treatment received care through an outpatient treatment program. Also, 40.7% of those who saw treatment received it through an opioid treatment program.

While alcohol use was the most commonly reported substance abused by those who sought treatment at 45.9%, heroin use came in second at 23.9% among individuals who sought care.

A majority (47.2%) of the admissions for drug addiction treatment took place in upstate New York. Admissions for residents in New York City was 38.7% while Long Island admission rates were 14.1%.

Interestingly enough, between 2017 and 2022, admissions for substance use related to alcohol abuse increased by 21.8% while admissions for heroin use decreased by 24.4%. This gives a little more insight into the changing landscape of substance use struggles throughout New York State.

Unsurprisingly, age ranges that were more likely to seek care for their addiction struggles were individuals aged 25 to 44 years old who made up 52.4% of admissions rates in 2022. Funded by the Office of Addiction Services and Supports, the New York State HOPEline is accessible around the clock and provides you with supportive care if you’re experiencing a mental health crisis or need support for your addiction struggles. The Bowery Mission

Public Health Law Section 3309(7)
A number of public health laws have been passed in New York to tackle prescription misuse and overdose deaths. For example, effective June 28, 2022, there was a new provision to the state’s opioid overdose prevention statute. Public Health Law Section 3309(7) now requires select prescribers to provide an initial opioid prescription with an opioid antagonist to help minimize the risk of misuse and opioid overdose.
The New York State 911 Good Samaritan Law
Under the state’s 911 Good Samaritan Law, if you or a loved one are experiencing an alcohol or drug overdose then you can call 911 for medical attention without fear of arrest. This law extends to individuals who witnessed someone overdosing as well.
