Fatal drug overdoses in Miami Dade County have slowly been on the decline according to Florida’s Substance Use Dashboard but there have been some spikes over the past couple of years.
There was a jump in fatal overdoses in the second quarter of 2020 with 143 total recorded deaths, 111 of which were because of opioid use. This number dropped to 91 in the last quarter of 2020 and dipped again in the second quarter of 2022 with a recorded 87 total fatalities related to drug overdoses.
Unfortunately, cases of fatal overdoses began to climb in the middle of 2022, reaching 123 recorded deaths in the fourth quarter of 2022 before leveling out again at 111 in the second quarter of 2023.
Fatal drug overdoses in Miami Dade County are on the decline but overall non-fatal overdose emergency room visits have been on the rise. Recorded data shows that as of the first quarter of 2024 there were 578 ER visits for non fatal overdoses. This is a slight jump from the 454 recorded visits in the second quarter of 2020.
