The county experienced 972 reported nonfatal overdose emergency room visits in the first quarter of 2020. Those numbers declined during the pandemic, dipping to the lowest at 813 nonfatal overdose visits at the end of 2023 before spiking back up to 994 in the third quarter of 2021.
Nonfatal overdoses ER visits declined significantly at the start of 2024 with 635 occurring at the time of the report. Nonfatal overdoses because of opioid use increased while nonfatal overdoses because of heroin use decreased during this time period.
The state’s annual briefings compiled in partnership with the United Way of Broward County Commission on Behavioral Health and Drug Prevention also detail that there was a historic decline in the number of residents who sought treatment for their addiction struggles between 2020 and 2022. However that number jumped more than 12% in 2023 as there were a documented 4,4025 admissions for addiction treatment.
