Feel Better, Live Better: Why Sober October Is Worth It

According to Dr. Alison Tarlow, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Certified Addictions Professional (CAP) at Boca Recovery Center, choosing to stay sober for October can have a big impact on both your physical and emotional well-being. Here’s what she says you can expect:

  • Physical benefits: Without alcohol, your liver gets a break and can detox more efficiently, digestion improves, and your skin may clear up. You may also experience better sleep, as alcohol disrupts REM sleep, and you could lose weight by cutting out empty calories. Sobriety boosts your immune system, helping you fight off colds and flu more effectively.
  • Emotional well-being: Many people report feeling more emotionally stable, with reduced anxiety and fewer mood swings. Mental clarity improves, and you may feel more present in social situations, leading to better, more meaningful conversations.
  • Social improvements: Staying sober can open the door to new activities, like mocktail nights, fitness classes, or hobbies that don’t involve alcohol.

To stay on track, Dr. Tarlow suggests trying these tips:

  • Set goals: Start with clear, specific goals. Do you want to feel more energized, mentally sharp, or just proud of completing the challenge? Write your goals down and keep them visible as a daily reminder.
  • Try alternatives: Replace drinking with other fun activities, such as experimenting with mocktail recipes, joining a fitness class, or reading a new book.
  • Build a support system: Share your goals with friends, family, or online communities. Having an accountability partner can help you stay on track and celebrate your wins along the way.

One fall mocktail Dr. Tarlow recommends is the Spiced Apple Ginger Fizz. It combines fresh apple cider, ginger beer, and lime, topped with a pinch of cinnamon. The ginger aids digestion, and the apple and cinnamon bring cozy fall flavors to your sober experience.

If you’re planning to stay sober through the holiday season, Dr. Tarlow advises setting limits ahead of social events. Bring your own non-alcoholic drinks and practice confidently saying ‘no’ when offered alcohol. Surround yourself with supportive people, and focus on what really matters—connection, thankfulness, and celebration.
