Struggling with Addiction? Get Help Now

Substance use within the LGBTQ+ community has long been a topic of concern due to higher rates of substance use and unique stressors faced by this population. So, how prevalent is it in 2024? Boca Recovery Center’s recent study aimed to uncover the realities of substance use patterns, their workplace impacts, and perceptions among LGBTQ+ individuals about substance use in their community.

We surveyed LGBTQ+ community members for insights into their experiences with substances, from party culture to coping mechanisms. Explore our key findings in this article, from the relationship between substance use and LGBTQ+ identity to the challenges faced by community members in various aspects of their lives.

Key Takeaways

  • 1 in 2 LGBTQ+ people feel party culture is over-emphasized in the community.
  • 16% say their substance use increases during pride month.
  • 21% have used substances at work, and 63% of them did so to get through the workday.
  • More than 1 in 5 have used substances as a coping mechanism for discrimination or stress related to being LGBTQ+.
  • 1 in 3 LGBTQ+ people said substance use has negatively impacted their lives in some way.

Substance Use Patterns in the LGBTQ+ Community

This section of our study examines the relationship between substance use and cultural dynamics within the LGBTQ+ community.

Many people use drugs and/or alcohol as a coping mechanism to alleviate negative emotions, including those stemming from experiences of discrimination and marginalization—which are common within the LGBTQ+ community. This substance use has lent itself to a “party culture” that can be dangerous for LGBTQ+ people. However, 1 in 2 of those we surveyed said party culture is over-emphasized in their community. Nonetheless, substance use has been a coping mechanism for more than 1 in 5 of our respondents, who said they’ve used substances to cope with stress related to LGBTQ+ discrimination. We also identified seasonal patterns in substance use, with 16% of respondents saying their substance use increases during Pride month. This celebratory period may present unique challenges for those struggling with substance use issues.

Substance Use Impact on Work and Academic Life

We also examined the intersection of substance use with professional and academic environments in the LGBTQ+ community. Our findings below reveal concerning trends in substance use in these settings and its effects on performance.

Substance use can have far-reaching impacts beyond personal life, extending into professional and educational spheres. We found that 21% of our LGBTQ+ respondents have used substances at work, with 63% of them saying they did so to get through the workday. Another 15% reported that substance use has negatively affected their work or academic performance. Counseling can offer coping strategy alternatives that are much more effective and sustainable than substances for managing stress and anxiety.

Broader Impacts of Substance Use in the LGBTQ+ Community

Finally, let’s explore how substance use affects LGBTQ+ individuals overall and how the community feels about the issue.

One-third of LGBTQ+ individuals said substance use has negatively impacted their lives. Similarly, 65% of respondents felt that LGBTQ+ community members are at a higher risk of substance abuse compared to the general population. This could indicate a widespread acknowledgment of substance use challenges within the LGBTQ+ community and a need for targeted support and intervention strategies.

Inclusive Care & Addressing LGBTQ+ Substance Use Challenges

Substance use can affect many aspects of people’s lives, from work performance to overall well-being. The perception that substance use poses more risk to the LGBTQ+ community could point to a need for tailored support for these individuals. By acknowledging these challenges and working towards comprehensive solutions, we can foster a more supportive, inclusive environment that promotes health and well-being for LGBTQ+ community members.

Methodology

We conducted online surveys of 1,001 individuals from the LGBTQ+ community to gather insights into their experiences with substances.
