When choosing a rehab facility in 2023, consider factors like these:

  • Accreditations
  • Specialized programs
  • Personalized treatment plans Qualifications of staff members
  • Post-treatment support
  • Client testimonials

Choosing the right rehabilitation facility is a critical decision that can greatly impact your recovery journey or the experience of your loved one in treatment.[1] Several factors will play a role in your decision, from pinpointing the right treatment services for your needs to whether or not they will work with your insurance provider and how far the program is from home.

What Factors Should You Consider When Choosing a Rehab Facility?

As you assess different addiction treatment facilities, consider these factors:[2-6]

Past Treatment Efforts

If you tried an outpatient program in the past but found it ineffective, an inpatient program may be a better fit. If you have attempted to stay close to home to be near family and that proved to be a distraction, a treatment program farther away from home may work better. Aim to identify what has — and hasn’t — worked well for you in the past to give yourself the best environment for success.

Specific Needs & Types of Treatment

If you have opioid use disorder (OUD) or alcohol use disorder (AUD), you’ll need medical detox. You’ll also need medical supervision and support for benzodiazepine withdrawal. Ensure that the rehab facilities you’re considering have the medical and other services you need. Not every rehab will offer every service.

Accreditations

Accreditations demonstrate that the facility meets strict standards of quality and safety, showing their commitment to excellence. These credentials assure you that the facility follows industry best practices and undergoes regular evaluations.

Awards

Awards can showcase exceptional achievements and recognition in specific areas of care, which you or your loved one will have access to upon entry into the rehab center. If a rehab has been recognized for its high standards and remarkable accomplishments, it can give confidence in the quality of care they provide.

Medical Staff

Review the qualifications and experience of the medical staff members, including medical directors, doctors, and other staff members. Ideally, you want staff who have experience dealing with your specific conditions, such as experience treating clients with co-occurring disorders or a history of trauma.

Insurance

Rehab can be expensive, so the goal should be to maximize your insurance coverage first. Confirm the facility you choose can work with your insurance provider. Have them confirm your benefits and outline all out-of-pocket charges you can expect.

Many rehab facilities offer financing options to make out-of-pocket costs more manageable.

Individualized Care

Treatment should be personalized. The best rehab facilities will assess your situation and craft a treatment plan addressing your unique needs. There should also be flexibility in the plan, as it will need to be adjusted as you progress in recovery.

Location & Accessibility

Location can play a significant role in your choice of recovery program, especially if family members would like to take part in your treatment plan. Proximity to your support network can mean extra emotional support, but in some cases, you might need space from your loved ones to adequately focus on recovery. If going away for treatment is preferred, easy travel options can simplify visitation and family involvement.

If legal issues play a role in the recovery process, remaining local to meet with court and parole officials will be a major selection criterion.

Reputation & Reviews

Testimonials from previous clients can give unique insight into the experience of a facility, often providing details that aren’t evident from the rehab center’s website or other materials. You can also ask the rehab center if there are any alumni you can talk to about their experience. This is an opportunity to ask specific questions about any areas you feel wary about.

Additional Amenities & Support Services

While they aren’t necessarily part of the core treatment provided, additional amenities can significantly enhance your overall experience, especially if you have unique needs that are not addressed by the central treatment program.

Facilities that provide a holistic approach to recovery may provide amenities like recreational activities, massage therapy, nutritional therapy, and alternative therapies like acupuncture, yoga, and other options to promote overall well-being.

Aftercare support, such as activities that focus on integration back into the community, can be valuable. These services can ease the transition from rehab into daily life. Since the early days of recovery, after leaving a formal treatment program, can be a vulnerable time, additional support can be crucial.

Potential Signs That a Rehab Facility Is Not the Right Fit

As you look around at rehab programs, you may find that multiple options appear to be a good fit objectively speaking, but when you look closer at the details, a few red flags jump out, indicating that it may be better to keep looking.

Some of these red flags include the following:[7-9]

Pressure Tactics

Beware of places that immediately pressure you to commit to treatment. And watch out for those that push you to choose the longest or most intensive treatment plan even if it’s not indicated that it would be the best choice for you.

Instead, look for a facility that takes the time to understand your unique needs and goals. They should offer a personalized treatment plan instead of pressuring you into a predetermined approach.

Bad Reviews

A lot of bad reviews can indicate a pattern of poor performance by the professionals working at the program. Notice the nature of the bad reviews. If they involve staff members being inappropriate, stealing meds, or otherwise mistreating clients, keep looking.

Lack of Experience

Check the qualifications and expertise of the staff members to ensure they have the necessary credentials and experience. If you find that there are few credentialed specialists on staff or that the professionals with degrees are rarely at the facility, continue your search.

Lack of Transparency

Evaluate the facility’s transparency and openness in providing information about treatment methods, costs, insurance coverage, and other important details. Communication is key, so if they don’t give straight answers on specifics or they downplay your concerns without providing evidence to back up their responses, it’s not a good sign.

Limited Aftercare

Look into the program’s aftercare treatment options and their policies regarding long-term treatment, extending treatment if needed, and adapting to the changing needs of clients. If they are unable to be flexible, they may be ill-equipped to provide the best care possible.

Your Intuition

Ultimately, if everything seems to check out — from your insurance to the offerings to the professionals on staff — but your intuition tells you that something is missing, consider other options. You should feel good about the rehab facility you choose, so it’s worth it to find the right fit for you.
